Do you have an interest in leading a team responsible for traffic engineering, safety engineering and planning, advertising management, sign shop, and special operations? If you do, apply to be the Bureau Director of Traffic and Safety in the Systems Operations Division! This at-will position is a Transportation Engineer Executive classification. As the Bureau Director for the Traffic and Safety Bureau, you will provide leadership and supports 5 work units and 33 employees. Other responsibilities include managing annual programs/budgets totaling over 45 million dollars including Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) funds, Traffic Safety Improvement Program (TSIP) funds, Outside Services, three separate Operational budgets, and an Information Technology budget.

Shift Requirements: 40 hours per week, day shift, occasional overnight travel required.

As the Traffic & Safety Bureau Director, your duties will include, but are not limited to:
- Being responsible for all programs, processes, funding, and decisions made within the Bureau. The specific sections in the Bureau include:
- Safety Engineering and Planning
- manages safety funding programs, administers access management, provides statewide planning documents, and manages crash data while also providing analysis tools.
- Traffic Engineering
- sets speed limits; maintains the sign inventory; develops signing, lighting, and traffic signal projects; and works with Districts to keep these traffic control devices up-to-date and operational.
- Advertising Management
- manages outdoor advertising signs, logo signs, and tourist-oriented signs along our highways.
- Sign Shop
- produces and warehouses the signs used on state highways.
- Special Operations
- optimize work zones, adopt best practices with intelligent transportation systems, and create innovative outreach to the traveling public.
Additional Requirement: you must possess and maintain a Professional Engineer’s license in the state of Iowa.

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
1) All of the following (a and b):
a. Licensure as a professional engineer; and
b. Six years of full-time professional work experience in transportation engineering or civil engineering, one year of which must have included supervisory/managerial responsibilities.
2) All of the following (a, b, and c):
a. Licensure as a professional engineer; and
b. Five years of full-time professional work experience in transportation engineering or civil engineering, one year of which must have included supervisory/managerial responsibilities; and
c. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in chemical, civil, construction, environmental, materials, structural, or transportation engineering; engineering management; or a field closely related to transportation engineering.
3) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes one year of full-time work as a Transportation Engineer Administrator.
