Location: Ames
 
Shift: Days, Monday through Thursday
 
The Design Bureau is looking to hire a full time Land Surveyor Senior that will be part of a team developing projects that enhance the state and national transportation systems in Iowa.  This individual will be an essential member of a Preliminary Survey team that develops survey information that will be utilized in developing highway and bridge projects.
 
Typical Responsibilities:
 

  • Responsible for assisting the survey manager in coordinating field survey operations of the Bureau.
  • Administers survey planning and performance relating to the acquisition of data for transportation improvement projects using unmanned aviation systems (UAS).
  • Ensures that all FAA and Iowa DOT training, policy and procedures are following during the operation of UAS.
  • Lead role in gathering and compiling information for existing geodetic control in project area.
  • Inspect, process and adjust static observations using GNSS network adjustment software and certify final control coordinates as a licensed land surveyor.
  • Reviews consultant contract survey proposals and submittals for compliance with Design Bureau survey standards and processes for survey control work.
  • Assists in operating and providing network support for the Continuously Operating Reference Station (CORS) system as requested by network manager.
  • Review field staff utilization of survey data collection software and recommend improvements to processes.
  • Provides technical assistance to preliminary survey staff, consultants, construction staff and district offices.

Travel:  In-state overnight travel sometimes required.
 
License: 

  • Driver’s License.   
  • State of Iowa Land Surveyor License.
  • FAA small UAS (unmanned aircraft system) part 107 certifications required within 6 months of hire.

Additional Requirements

  • Must be able to work outdoors year around in all weather conditions.
  • Post offer, pre-employment physical.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Possession of a current professional land surveyor's license as issued by the Iowa Board of Engineering and Land Surveying and the equivalent of two years of full time professional land surveying experience;

OR

employees with current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes experience equal to eighteen months of full-time professional work as a Land Surveyor 1.
