Engineering Technician Senior (Design Tech)
As an Engineering Tech Sr., you will serve as part of the District 6 land survey team. You will use survey and legal records and data, combined with engineering drawings using CADD, to produce property plats and legal descriptions for acquisition on development projects, or for disposition of excess land not needed for highway right-of-way.
Responsibilities include:
- Compile all pertinent record information of ownership lines, section lines, and right-of way lines using many methods including utilizing shp & .dbf files.
- Prepare acquisition plats, excess land sale plats or abandonment plats using CADD.
- Prepare metes and bounds legal descriptions that describe right-of-way to be acquired by, warranty, deed, easement or condemnation and for the disposal of excess right-of-way by sale, abandonment or transfer of jurisdiction.
- Use coordinate geometry computer software and Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) to integrate record information of property interests or rights and right-of-way interests or rights into Open Roads software.
- Prepare Land Corner Certificates and monument preservation certificates
- Assist the Land Surveyor Senior in researching, evaluating and interpreting official records.
- Conducts field reconnaissance to determine most efficient way to perform field surveys.
- Reviews and corrects Acquisition Plats, Excess Land Plats, and Abandonments Plats, prior to review and approval/professional certification by the Land Surveyor Senior.
- Contact person for requests from the public, property owners, and Property Management within the Right-Of-Way (ROW) Bureau to purchase or lease excess or non-required ROW.
- Perform field surveys for excess ROW parcels.
- Create and maintain GIS databases for tracking ROW parcels throughout disposal process.
- Maintain an up-to-date excess land inventory record and establish a schedule that coordinates District & property management goals for reducing the amount of excess lands in the inventory.
- Work with District ROW personal to submit ROW/survey data collected during the T1/T2 events into the Iowa DOT survey portal data base.
- Maintain complete and current record of all District right-of-way transactions that are readily available to all District personnel, other government bodies and private sector engineering and land surveying firms.
- Coordinate UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) survey scheduling within the District and keep current on new capabilities and uses of UAV’s.
- Assist in the scheduling and coordination of right-of-way work in accordance with departmental production schedules.
This position requires the ability to: work under general direction and complete assignments working independently or as part of a team; work collaboratively with DOT Staff, consulting engineers, public and private companies, local government agencies and the general public.
Work Hours: Monday through Friday, 7:45 AM to 4:30 PM
Travel: Occasional overnight travel may be required

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate's degree in civil engineering or a related field, and experience equal to five years of full-time work in engineering survey, construction inspection, highway design, materials inspection, or materials testing.
- A total of seven years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in civil engineering or a related field equals one year of full-time experience.
- Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes twelve months of full-time work as a Construction Technician Senior or Design Technician Specialist, or four years of full-time work as a Construction Technician or Design Technician.
