As a HVAC Technician (Power Plant Engineer 3):
 
You will work as a member of a three person team responsible for operating and maintaining the power plant and/or auxiliary equipment such as boilers, chillers, programmable controls, pumps, condensers, generators, air compressors and refrigeration equipment for all Iowa Department of Transportation’s facilities in Ames and Ankeny totaling more than 500,000 sq. ft. of space.

Duties include, but not limited to: 
As a member of a three person trades team and the 10 person Building Services work unit:

  • Performs routine preventive maintenance on systems equipment; oils/lubricates fans, motors, pumps and generators and cleans screens, strainers, burners and automatic controls; performs any maintenance tasks.
  • Installs, maintains, operates and repairs a wide variety of heating/distribution systems (e.g., gas central heat forced air ducted, gas fired radiant tube heat, electric powered radiant panel heat, hydronic radiant heating, electric radiant heat, packaged terminal units, heat pumps, low pressure steam boiler systems, and air conditioning systems (e.g., air conditioners, chillers, packaged terminal units, and window units) and refrigeration units (e.g., built-up coolers and freezers, domestic appliances, ice making machines, and commercial systems).
  • Conducts routine inspections of air conditioning, heating/distribution and refrigeration systems/equipment to ensure proper operation according to specifications/trade standards and services; inspects building and makes calculations to determine proper size of air conditioning, heating, and ducting systems; 
  • Conducts tests/diagnostic procedures on building automated systems using graphical user interface programs and repairs system components (e.g., electrical to pneumatic transducers, pneumatic and electrical actuation of dampers, hydraulic, steam, and chilled water valves, control relays, and pressure and temperature sensors).
  • Repairs/replaces a wide variety of system components (e.g., supply and return side, plenum, trunk and branch ductwork; compressors, condensers, valves, bearings, shafts, motors, pumps, cooling towers, pneumatic control systems, temperature and pressure controls, gauges, fans, humidifiers, refrigerant lines, electrical circuits, computer controls, and electronic components; fire tubes, baffles, fire boxes, refractory elements, steam pipes, pump controls, burners; cabinets, condensing units, evaporator, defrosters, relays, compressor motor, dryers, capillary tubes, ice makers) that make heating, ventilation, air conditioning, boilers, and refrigeration systems work.
  • Installs, alters, maintains, and repairs a variety of plumbing fixtures, such as sinks, toilet units, shower units, automatic flush valves, faucets and traps.
  • Installs, alters, maintains, and repairs sewer, water, storm water, gas, steam and air lines; installs and repairs pipe coverings 
  • Collaborates with and coordinates the work of contractors performing routine and specialized work on facilities components and systems.
  • Acts as a liaison for after-hours maintenance needs in taking emergency calls (such as no heat and or broken water valves etc.)
  • Other duties as assigned to support the Building Services Unit, etc.

Location:
This position is in Ames, IA and will report to Brett Hambly Public Service Supervisor
 
Shift:
Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with family friendly flexibility
Some travel throughout the state and some overnight stays may be required.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Experience equal to three years of full-time work in the operation, maintenance and repair of steam generating boilers, centralized air-conditioning or electrical power generating equipment and auxiliary systems;

OR

an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting 30 semester hours of accredited coursework from a military school or recognized trade or vocational school in power plant engineering principles including the operation, maintenance and repair of steam boilers for each year of the required experience to a maximum substitution of one year;

OR

employees with current continuous experience in the state Executive Branch that includes experience equal to one year of full-time experience as a Power Plant Engineer 2.

Additional Qualification Requirements

Within a period of time as determined by the appointing authority, certain employees in this class may be required to obtain a Fire Sprinkler Installer and Maintenance License in accordance with Chapter 100D, Iowa Code.

Designated positions in this job class require applicants to obtain the required certification, license and endorsements within a period of time as determined by the appointing authority at the time of hire.
