Job Description

This Construction Technician Senior position is for a project inspector.  The project inspector will lead inspection activities on large or complex construction projects or on a major phase of a large, complex project.  Typical duties require:  The coordination of activities of a team of assigned inspectors; compile, analyze, and maintain project records; monitor and coordinate inspection activities on several construction projects underway simultaneously, such as grading, and paving projects; perform a variety of standard quality control tests; maintain detailed project records and prepare periodic reports on project progress and expenditures; review field construction reports; and verify quantities.

Lifting:  Ability to perform heavy work, occasionally (1-33% of the time) lifting/lowering, carrying and pushing/pulling various items/using force from 50 - 100 lbs.  Team lift or mechanical assist recommended for weights over 75 lbs.

Driver's License:  Must possess and maintain a valid Class C Driver's License upon hire.

Materials:  Requires certifications for testing materials (specifically Agg. 1 & 2, PCC 1 & 2, HMA 1, Erosion Control, and Soils) and operating specialized equipment as needed by the DOT's Technical Training and Certification Program for Materials and Construction required.

Additional Requirements:

  • Inspection duties in adverse weather and in high traffic areas required.
  • Position requires occasional travel and may be required to stay away from home overnight during assignments and for certification classes.
  • Position requires persons to work overtime (8-16 consecutive hours) and some holidays, during the spring, summer and fall construction season to complete inspection duties.
  • Prior to starting employment, all persons are required to have a post offer pre-employment physical verifying the physical ability to perform the duties described.
  • Variable Day Shift (7:45 AM - 4:30 PM M-F Typ.), Occasional Overtime and infrequent overnight travel required. Weekend work likely and potential for night shifts on rare occasions.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from high school, or G.E.D. and experience equal to five years of full-time work in engineering survey, construction inspection, materials inspection, materials testing, or the building construction trades;

OR

qualifying experience may be substituted on a year for year basis for the required education;

OR

employees with current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes the equivalent of experience equal to eighteen months of full-time work as a Construction Technician.

Additional Qualification Requirements

All of the following apply to Department of Transportation positions only:

  • Designated positions in this class require possession of a valid Commercial Learner's Permit upon hire. Within a timeframe determined by the appointing authority, a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with the required endorsements and applicable restrictions must be obtained and subsequently maintained in order to continue employment.
  • If a CDL is not designated, all positions are required to have and maintain a minimum of a valid Class C Non-Commercial Operator's License.
  • In conjunction with Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations (parts 40 and 382), designated positions in this job class require a pre-employment drug screen and will require ongoing participation in the employer's random drug and alcohol testing program and will be subject to the regulations regarding the Federal drug and alcohol testing program.
  • Prior to starting employment, all persons are required to have a post offer pre-employment physical verifying the physical ability to perform the duties described.
  • Positions require certification for testing materials and operating specialized equipment as required by the Iowa Department of Transportation's Technical Training and Certification Program for Highway Materials and Construction; and/or other certifications as required.
  • Employees must be able to travel and may be required to stay away from home overnight during assignments. Employees in designated positions must be able to work up to 16 consecutive hours.

Travel may be required for positions in this class. Employees must arrange transportation to and from assigned work areas.
