Job Description

This Engineering Technician Senior position is a member of the District 1 construction team located in the District 1 office in Ames. Provides paraprofessional engineering support to the District Construction Engineer (DCE) and District Local Systems Engineer (DLSE). Provides contract administration for federal and state funded primary, county, city, and parks and institutional road construction projects. Monitors progress of federal and state funded transportation construction projects in District 1 to ensure compliance with federal and state guidelines.

Duties include: Provide contract administration for federal and state funded primary, county, city, and parks and institutional road construction projects. Includes reviewing contracts for content and accuracy, documenting modifications, conducting a final review of the project records and maintaining a log and file of active projects. Complete District Office Audit (primary projects) or Final Audit (federal-aid secondary projects) in a timely manner. Generally, the final audit will examine project records in the following areas: internal office controls, procedures, and documentation; material certifications and test approvals; field documentation; project engineer's office audit; and final pay quantities.

Monitor progress of federal and state funded transportation construction projects in District 1 to ensure compliance with federal and state guidelines. Monitor and process payment requests from cities, counties, and other recipients of state or federal funding, tracking progress through final payment and project close out. Assist and provide guidance to agencies requesting to utilize federal or state funds for professional services, construction, and other project elements.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate's Degree in Civil Engineering or related field and experience equal to five years of full-time work in engineering survey, construction inspection, materials inspection or materials testing;

OR

any equivalent combination of education and experience substituting qualifying experience for the education on the basis of one year of experience for thirty semester hours of education;

OR

employees with current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes the experience equal to one year of full-time work as a Construction Technician Senior or four years of full-time work as a Construction Technician.

Additional Qualification Requirements

  • Designated positions in this class require possession of a valid Commercial Learner's Permit upon hire. Within a timeframe determined by the appointing authority, a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with the required endorsements and applicable restrictions must be obtained and subsequently maintained in order to continue employment.
  • If a CDL is not required, designated positions are required to have and maintain a minimum of a valid Class C Non-Commercial Operator's License.
  • In conjunction with Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations (parts 40 and 382), designated positions in this job class require a pre-employment drug screen and will require ongoing participation in the employer's random drug and alcohol testing program and will be subject to the regulations regarding the Federal drug and alcohol testing program.
  • Prior to starting employment, all persons in designated positions are required to have a post offer pre-employment physical verifying the physical ability to perform the duties described.
  • Employees in designated positions must be able to travel and may be required to stay away from home overnight during assignments.
  • Employees in designated positions must be able to work up to 16 consecutive hours.
