Job Description

This Engineering Technician Senior position is a member of the District 5 Construction staff located at the District 5 Office in Fairfield. This person will assist the District Construction Engineer; assist with oversight of contract administration of Primary and Local System highway and bridge construction projects in District 5.

Duties include:

  • Reviews contract documents for content and accuracy
  • Make on-site field inspections of construction projects, to insure compliance with contract documents and adherence to good work practices
  • Provide oversight of project erosion control and compliance with project Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP's)
  • Promote and oversee project utilization of the Department's Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO) practices on construction projects
  • Champion Department initiatives associated with paperless contract administration (e-construction); provide technical assistance regarding contract administration issues to DOT and Local Agency staff, including consultant inspection
  • Attend preconstruction meetings and project meetings to provide input and answer project-related questions from the contractor, project personnel, local governments, consultants and the public
  • Maintain District project files, electronic and paper
  • Track and prepare reports on project status
  • Promote other innovative initiatives in contract administration as these become available.
  • This position also performs duties related to winter snow and ice removal.

CDL: Must possess a valid Commercial Learner's Permit upon hire. Within 30 calendar days following appointment, a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with the required endorsements and applicable restrictions must be obtained and maintained in order to continue employment. Requires a pre-employment drug screen and will require ongoing participation in the employer's random drug and alcohol testing program and will be subject to the regulations regarding the Federal drug and alcohol testing program.  

Lifting: Ability to occasionally (1-33% of time) lift/lowers, carries and pulls/pushes various amounts of force within the "heavy work" as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor: team lift or mechanical assist items recommended for weighs over 75 pounds.  

Prior to starting employment, all persons are required to have a post offer pre-employment physical verifying the physical ability to perform the duties described.  

Additional Requirements:

  • Post offer, pre-employment physical.
  • Must be able to work up to 16 consecutive hours.
  • Some overnight travel may be required.
  • Shift: Days M-F, 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Occasional overtime work may be required.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate's Degree in Civil Engineering or related field and experience equal to five years of full-time work in engineering survey, construction inspection, materials inspection or materials testing;

OR

any equivalent combination of education and experience substituting qualifying experience for the education on the basis of one year of experience for thirty semester hours of education;

OR

employees with current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes the experience equal to one year of full-time work as a Construction Technician Senior or four years of full-time work as a Construction Technician.

  • Designated positions in this class require possession of a valid Commercial Learner's Permit upon hire.   • If a CDL is not required, designated positions are required to have and maintain a minimum of a valid Class C Non-Commercial Operator's License.
  • In conjunction with Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations (parts 40 and 382), designated positions in this job class require a pre-employment drug screen and will require ongoing participation in the employer's random drug and alcohol testing program and will be subject to the regulations regarding the Federal drug and alcohol testing program.
  • Prior to starting employment, all persons in designated positions are required to have a post offer pre-employment physical verifying the physical ability to perform the duties described.
  • Employees in designated positions must be able to travel and may be required to stay away from home overnight during assignments.
  • Employees in designated positions must be able to work up to 16 consecutive hours.
