Job Description

This position is in the Location Section of the Office of Location and Environment.

The primary responsibility of this position is managing and developing projects assigned to the Location Section, through the planning and initial concept stage to the design stage. Typical work involves:

Preliminary Engineering and design to determine potential impacts associated with proposed highway improvements, scheduling and conducting of technical and public meetings, the initiation and management of of consultant contracts, extra work orders, and correspondence.

Typical projects require the application of transportation engineering principles to the unique problems encountered as well as knowledge of location engineering techniques necessary to develop concepts for safe and efficient highways.

Coordination and communication with various DOT offices, as well as federal, state and local agencies is essential. This includes making presentations at public hearings and city/county and other local meetings.

Must have, or prior to appointment, must obtain an active Iowa professional engineering license through the Iowa Professional Licensing Bureau - Engineering and Land Surveying Examination Board

Travel: Occasional evening travel, some overnight.

Shift: Days, Monday through Friday, with flex time available. Evening meetings required.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Licensed as a professional engineer, and the equivalent of two years of full-time licensed professional transportation or related civil engineering experience. Must have, or prior to appointment, must obtain an active Iowa professional engineering license through the Iowa Professional Licensing Bureau – Engineering and Land Surveying Examination Board;

OR

a Masters degree in chemical, civil, construction, environmental, materials, structural, or transportation engineering; engineering management; or an area closely related to transportation engineering may be substituted for one year of the required experience;

OR

employees with current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes experience equal to twelve months of full-time experience as a Transportation Engineer.
