The Highway Technician Senior is located in the Cedar Rapids Field Office. The Highway Technician Senior must function as a Lead Worker. The Highway Technician Senior will function as a project inspector on small to moderately complex construction projects and may audit projects. Responsibilities include quality control testing according to established procedures, preparing reports, documenting project activities, preparing asbuilts, performing project related technical duties, reviewing project documentation, auditing projects, preparing final paperwork for district audits and finalization of projects. The Highway Technician Senior must be able to work in a team environment with a minimum of supervision as a project inspector on smaller projects, be able to work with a project manager on larger projects and be able to work with other inspectors, utility representatives, other departments and various government entities.
Specific knowledge of highway and bridge construction methods and inspection is required. General knowledge of construction survey is desired. The Highway Technician Senior must be able to use or have the ability to learn to use computer hardware and software necessary in the completion of their project related duties. Employee must possess and maintain the following certifications for sampling and testing of materials, as a minimum; Agg 1 & 2, PCC 1 & 2 , HMA 1, HMA Sampler and Erosion Control Technician. A pre-employment drug screen and on-going participation in the random drug and alcohol testing program is required. The position also performs duties related to winter snow and ice removal.
Must possess a valid Commercial Learner’s Permit upon hire. Within 14 calendar days following appointment, a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License with the required endorsements and applicable restrictions must be obtained and maintained in order to continue employment.
Ability to occasionally (1-33% of the time) lift/lower, carry and push/pull various amounts of force within the "heavy work" as defined by the US Department of Labor; team lift or mechanical assist recommended for weights over 75 pounds.
Prior to starting employment all persons are required to have a post offer, pre-employment physical verifying the physical ability to perform the duties described.
Must be able to work various day and/or night shift hours.
Travel: Some overnight travel may be required.
