Location: Ames - Office of Aviation, Iowa DOT
 
This Transportation Planner 1 serves as the Program Specialist in the Office of Aviation, providing a broad level of program and technical support to the office and to the aviation stakeholders in Iowa. Emphasis will be placed on planning, research, data analysis, and working with staff to better service the aviation customers.
 
The position will play a key role in the maintenance of databases used by the office.  It will also be responsible for proactively and routinely developing reports from the aviation database and other sources to provide accurate, timely and useful information as needed. This position will report regularly on trends occurring in aviation in Iowa, as it relates to (but not limited to) aviation activity, fuel usage, dealership licensing, aircraft registration, cargo, airport projects, and pavement conditions.  The candidate must be able to work with a variety of database platforms, ensure the accuracy and timeliness of data, and coordinate with IT for system enhancements.
 
The position will play a key role in the aircraft registration program.  The candidate must stay current on aircraft registration laws, aircraft types, and aviation activity in Iowa to effectively provide a high level of customer service and compliance with Iowa aircraft registration laws.  The position will play an important role in using data sources to plan and carry out aircraft registration compliance initiatives using spreadsheet analysis, Internet research, phone calls, interviews, letters, and questionnaires
 
This position will provide technical support for the state and federal aviation programs by working with grant applications, making payments and participating in special studies and other data collection efforts.
 
This position will play a role in the office’s outreach efforts through planning, participation and coordination of conferences, training sessions, and meetings. It will also assist in managing inventory and distribution of collateral materials used by the office.
 
The ideal candidate will have knowledge and background in aviation and/or airport operations.
 
Additional Requirements:  Applicants must have excellent customer service skills and have the ability to research a variety of resources to solve problems and create appropriate solutions. The applicant must be able to manage multiple and changing projects and priorities and see them through to completion. A strong desire and aptitude for attention to details will be required.  Functions of the position will require the successful applicant to be proficient in effective oral and written communications, problem solving, and Microsoft Office programs including Word and Excel. The ability to learn diverse database platforms is essential to the position.
 
This position reports to the director of the Office of Aviation and Public Transit in the Planning, Programming, and Modal Division of the DOT.

   
Graduation from an accredited college or university course work with a major in civil/transportation engineering, community development planning, economics, environmental engineering, mathematics, regional planning, transportation planning or urban planning.
